WhatsMyName Apps
How it works
WhatsMyName Apps checks one username across more than 3,150 public websites and shows you, site by site, where a profile with that name appears to exist. Here is what happens when you press search.
The scan
- Your browser splits the site list into small batches and sends them, with the username, to our server.
- For each site in a batch, our server requests that site's public profile URL for the username, the same page anyone could open in a browser.
- The server classifies each response using detection rules from the open-source WhatsMyName (CC BY-SA 4.0), Sherlock and Maigret (MIT) projects, for example by checking the status code or text that appears only on real profiles.
- Results stream back to your screen live, so you can start reading before the scan finishes.
- For found results, the tool fetches public profile details (name, avatar, bio) when the site makes them available.
You can check up to 5 usernames at once, check whether the name is free as a .com, .net, .org, .io or .us domain (via public RDAP data), and export everything as JSON or CSV.
What the statuses mean
- Found: the site returned what looks like an existing public profile.
- Not found: the response matched the pattern for a missing profile, which usually means the name is free there.
- Blocked: the site refused or rate-limited our request, so no answer was possible.
- Unknown: the response did not clearly match either pattern, for example after a timeout or a page redesign.
Privacy
The username is sent to our server only to run the check. It is not stored or logged. There is no sign-up. Read the full privacy policy.
Limits
- Some sites block automated requests, which shows up as Blocked. Open those profiles in your browser to check by hand.
- Sites change their pages, and the open-source rules can lag behind, so false positives and missed profiles happen.
- A matching username is not proof of who owns an account. Results are leads to verify, not facts about a person. WhatsMyName Apps is not a consumer reporting agency; do not use results for FCRA purposes.
FAQ
Is the username search free?
Yes. It is free to use and there is no sign-up or account.
How many sites does it check?
More than 3,150 sites, using site lists from the open-source WhatsMyName, Sherlock and Maigret projects.
Do you store the usernames I search?
No. The username is sent to our server only to run the check. It is not stored or logged.
Can I check more than one username at a time?
Yes. You can check up to 5 usernames at once, which is useful for comparing variations of a name.
What do Found, Not found, Blocked and Unknown mean?
Found: the site returned what looks like an existing public profile. Not found: the response matched the pattern for a missing profile. Blocked: the site refused or rate-limited the request. Unknown: the response did not clearly match either pattern.
Why does a result say Found when the profile does not exist?
That is a false positive. Websites change their pages, and the open-source detection rules can lag behind. Treat every result as a lead and open the profile yourself to confirm it.
Does a Found result mean a profile belongs to a specific person?
No. It only means a profile with that username appears to exist on that site. Many unrelated people use the same handles, and accounts can be recycled or impersonated. Results are leads to verify, not facts about a person.
Can I export the results?
Yes. You can download the results as JSON or CSV.
Does it check domain names too?
Yes. It checks whether the name is available as a .com, .net, .org, .io or .us domain using public RDAP registration data.
Can I use the results for background checks or hiring?
No. WhatsMyName Apps is not a consumer reporting agency. Results must not be used for employment, tenant screening, credit, insurance or any other purpose covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
